devon ales - the mansefield arms & devon ales microbrewery opening times: monday & thursday 11am - 11.30pm tuesday & wednesday 11am - 11pm friday & saturday 11am - 12.30am sunday 12.30pm - 11.30pm food served daily from 12noon - 9pm (except sunday 12.30pm - 9pm) visits to devon ales microbrewery are by prior arrangement only . established in 1992, devon ales is situated at the mansfield arms, sauchie on alloas outskirts. the mansfield arms is a family owned and run local hostelry that has seen over the last twenty years four generations of the gibson family working in a public bar which is soaked in atmosphere and can be classed as a true scottish working man's bar steeped in character and tradition where both the patter and ale flow in ample supply. the new found love of real ales stems back to 1988 when the mansfields present owners re-introduced the age old product to their bars which through time and an element of perseverance started to revive a substantial demand and sales in the once almost forgotten product. this perseverance and pursuit of quality and excellence in the products served culminated in their numerous camra awards which are proudly on display in the lounge bar of the mansfield arms. always keen to progress and to meet the now growing local demand for real ale in the wee county, the idea of their own brew house was born and in 1991 they started the building of a purpose built brewery situated to the rear of the mansfield arms. it was during the test brews for the new ales that the name devon ales was derived for the brewery, due to the input received from the ex-miners of the local devon collieries. it was acknowledged early in the planning and test brews that probably the finest beers in the world originated from and were brewed in the munich area of germany and the decision was therefore taken to brew devon ales using just four main ingredients, malt, hops, yeast and water like their german counterparts. this resulted in both of their outlets being awarded the cask marque seal of excellence for the quality of ales flowing through the fonts of their establishments. the gibson family look forward to further success with their ales in the future and to the 200 year anniversary of the brewery tap, the inn at muckhart in 2006. we are very proud of our ales and it would give us great delight for you to visit and enjoy their glorious taste which range from: devon original with a volume of 3.8% this is a session ale with full malty flavour and a distinctive hoppiness from the east kent goldings. devon pride with a volume of 4.8% this is a beer suited to the connoisseur who expects a beer in which they can taste all the best ingredients and it never disappoints. devon thick black with a volume of 4.1% this is a scottish stout whose flavour is obtained with the use of the very best ingredients and will be a great surprise in its flavour and taste. chopper's choice with a volume of 3.8% this beer is named in the memory of mr john dick our butcher of many years and a close family friend who was loved by all and is sadly missed and we promise in his memory this is a beer not to be missed. once you have worked up an appetite, why not join us for some traditional fayre. we proudly offer a comprehensive menu which uses high quality, fresh produce and fish, prepared in hearty portions all day, 7 days a week. with our delicious children's menu, we can cater for all the family! the mansefield arms & devon ales | holiday cottages | contact us copyright © 2006 devon ales - all rights reserved. site design by sprite ideas .
